On arriving in Las Vegas, they spent over five hours doing fittings, then with the make-up crew, trying hairstyles and make-up designs. Dawn, Angie and Jane spent some time with the photographers, working on poses for the pictures. Terry was taking pictures of everything at every stage. Dawn had gone into her usual organisational zone, but this time she had a weird jittery feeling in the pit of her stomach. She’d done hundreds of these shows and hadn’t had nerves this bad in the last fifteen years. The shoes to one of her outfits were missing.

“Angie, could you go into town and find my black and white hook and loop shoes, please?” she asked. “We have thirty-four mins.” She was staring at her watch.

Angie stared back at her, wide-eyed. “I don’t think I can find those in thirty-four minutes, Dawn. Your store isn’t even in the US. There’s a mall nearby, The Simon Centre, I think. As far as I know, they have Gucci and Fendi. I could try to find something similar.”

Dawn squeezed her cheeks together with her forefingers. “I can’t put her in another brand of shoes with my special dress, Angie.”

“But it’s not your brand anyway, it’s unnamed.”

“I know that. It doesn’t matter. The shoes are part of the outfit, I will know they aren’t my design, and it won’t feel right.”

Angie huffed. “I know, I know, I just don’t see another way.”

“Wait!” came a voice. They both turned to see Delvin approaching. “I’ve got a pair of your black chunky heeled loafers in my box. What about them?”

“They’ll have the white strap missing, but at least they will be my design.”

“If it helps, I have some spare white strappy shoes I was trying out. I could change the straps for you,” said Gloria.

“Oh wow, you guys are the best,” she gushed.

Delvin ran off to find the shoes; Gloria went to fetch the straps. Terry stood beside her, his hand on his chin. His eyebrows raised. Dawn turned and looked at him.

“What?”

“Of all the runways, in all of the cities, I’ve never seen designers work together so well.”

Dawn smiled proudly. “I have.”

“And I suspect that’s because your kindness is the common denominator, Lewis.”

She swiped a tear from her eye, then turned back around.

“Angie, could you get Jane to make up, then check that our music and settings are as they should be?”

“I’m on it,” Angie said, walking away.

Dawn inhaled deeply before heading to the salon to have her own hair and make-up taken care of, before changing into a black suit with a red jacket. A relief washed over her. Everything was coming together.

She pulled on a pair of silver and black Manolo Blahnik’s, She wanted to look professional for the moment she’d be called onto the stage.

Gloria walked into the room and handed her the shoes. She stared at them, then looked up.

“Gloria, they’re great, thank you so much.”

“It’s the least I can do.”

Delvin ran in jumping up and down. “Samuel Colton Jr and P. Diddy are in the building,” he said excitedly.
